Renting a Flat with 'Bad Vastu'? 7 Zero-Demolition Fixes Your Landlord Will Love
You don't need to break walls to fix a misplaced kitchen or toilet. Use colour zoning, plants and furniture placement instead.
Why renters need a different Vastu filter
Most people in cities live in apartments where moving a kitchen or a bathroom is impossible. A traditional Vastu report for such a flat can read like a list of faults you cannot change, and that is discouraging.
That is why Aroha's Rent Mode hides the structural warnings and works only with what a tenant can change. It balances the elements with colour, plants and furniture, and every fix can be undone when your lease ends.
Seven fixes that need no tools
- 1
1
Colour and textiles
Cushion covers, rugs and curtains change a room's elemental feel in an afternoon. Pick the colour that belongs to the zone, as in terracotta for fire in a South-East room, and keep the walls neutral.
- 2
2
A peel-and-stick accent wall
One panel in the right colour sets the tone of a zone and comes off cleanly when you move out. Check the adhesive with your landlord first, and test it on a small hidden patch.
- 3
3
Turn the furniture
Point a study desk to the North or East, or a bed headboard to the South. It takes ten minutes and costs nothing.
- 4
4
Plants in the North and North-East
A Tulsi, Money Plant or Peace Lily placed there brings in the water and air element in a natural way, and it gives the corner something living to look at.
- 5
5
A wood or metal divider in the kitchen
A simple walnut tray or a brass strip between the sink and the hob separates water from fire in a compact apartment kitchen.
- 6
6
Move the mirror
Take the dressing mirror off the South-West wall, or at least out of the bed's view, to keep the bedroom calm.
- 7
7
A door mat, a bowl of salt and a pale wall for a North-East toilet
Keep the door closed, put a bowl of sea salt inside, lay a Botanical Sage door mat outside and use Pale Ice Blue where you may paint.

Where to begin
Start with the bedroom, then the kitchen, since those two rooms have the clearest rules and the quickest fixes. Do one change at a time and give it a few days. If you change everything at once you will not know what helped.
Aroha's 2-minute Rent Mode check walks through the same list room by room, so you see which of the seven your flat actually needs.
